Educational focus
Primary focus on storytelling in mainstream Hollywood feature films and television, and in the corporate/non-profit arenas through advertising and public relations; an emphasis on the "business of the busniess," how the film industry works, i.e., how films are created, marketed, and exhibited.

Student body

Faculty  
30 full-time, 55 adjuncts. Faculty are working professionals who have won Oscars, Emmys and Clios.

Marion Knott Studios: 
  • A 76,000-square-foot facility openned in 2006
  • A 500-seat theater with digital cinema and 35 mm projection.

Industry Insiders
A steady stream of Hollywood guests has included Robert Zemeckis, Bryan Singer, Garry Marshall, Conrad Hall, Stephen Sommers, Paul Mazursky, Richard Donner, Randa Haines, Rob Cohen, Martha Coolidge, and many, many others.

Filmmaker-in-Residence
Each Spring, a renowned filmmaker spends 15 weeks on campus. Filmmakers-in-Residence have included directors Carl Franklin, Arthur Hiller, Mark Rydell, Daniel Petrie Sr, John Badham, Peter Medak, editor Bob Jones, writer/director David Ward, Sheldon Epps, Polly Platt and David Foster.

Hayde Filmmaker-in-Residence
This program, created through a generous donation from Lynette & Michael Hayde, allows a renowned filmmaker to spend the Fall semester on campus and mentor those students who have qualified to be Hayde Scholars. 

Location filmmaking
School funded productions include filmmaking on location with student scripts and crews selected competitively.  Many films are shot on 35mm or in hi-def.

Hollywood connections

  • First Cut: Select student films are screened for industry representatives at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) each fall and also at the Directors Guild in New York City each spring.
  • Killer Scripts: Summaries of top student scripts are sent directly to agents, producers, and development executives. 
  • Women in Focus: Annual conference featuring women in various aspects of the business.

Student production
Students get a camera in their hands from day one.

Public relations and advertising students
Take advantage of the tools of the film and television industry and the Internet to tell their stories for all types of businesses as they also learn about the marketing/promotion side of the entertainment business.

Internships
Internships are available at the major studios, networks, independent production companies and public relations and advertising agencies.  Internships abroad are also available at the Cannes Film Festival.

Alumni

  • Chapman alumni are currently working at many of the major production entities, including Imagine, CBS, NBC, UPN, Universal and Disney. 
  • PR and Advertising students have gone to work for agencies such as Porter Novelli; Fleishman Hillard; Foote, Cone & Belding as well as for corporations and non-profit institutions.
  • Broadcast Journalism alumni have been on the air in Los Angeles, Toledo, and Pittsburgh, among other cities, on network affiliates as well as local channels.

International Connections
Chapman is one of 13 U.S. colleges and universities elected to membership in Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision (CILECT), the preeminent international body of film schools.

The DeMille Connection
The old film school building was named Cecil B. DeMille Hall in honor of endowment support from Cecilia Presley, DeMille's granddaughter.  The DeMille name will be honored at Marion Knott Studios in the grand entrance to the building.

Chapman University
