***TV Production Interterm Class:
DO YOU WANT TO MAKE AN HOUR-LONG DRAMA?
Narrative Television has its own version of Location Filmmaking at Interterm. During the current (Fall) semester, Ross Brown is teaching a course where the students write pilots for one-hour ensemble TV dramas and one is chosen to be shot on HD at Interterm with a budget at the level of location filmmaking. If this sounds appealing, then apply for Professor James Gardner’s Interterm course FTV 363/573, SHOOTING THE HOUR LONG ENSEMBLE DRAMA. We need: DIRECTORS, PRODUCERS, CINEMATOGRAPHERS, EDITORS, SOUND DESIGNERS, SOUND RECORDISTS, ALL CREW. Step One of the application process is to immediately register for the course.

Step Two of the application is due Wednesday, 11/25/09. Students interested in key creative positions (Director, Producer, Cinematographer, Editor, Production Designer, Sound Designer, Costume Designer, Properties Master, Script Supervisor, Sound Recordist, Assistant Director) should e-mail Professor Gardner. The subject line of the e-mail should read "TV INTERTERM." Please clearly state the following in your e-mail: Name; Year in School; Major; Your experience in narrative production; Position for which you are applying; Specific skills and strengths that make you a strong candidate for that position; A second position in which you are interested; Resume. Please also drop off a DVD example of your work in Prof. Gardner’s mailbox before next Wednesday, 11/25/09 at noon. Other students wishing to participate but unsure of crew position desired should also e-mail Prof. Gardner by 11/25/09 with a resume and a letter outlining three possible areas of interest. Contact Prof. Gardner if you need permission to enroll in the course. This is a great opportunity for students at any level to gain hands-on, production experience.

Step Three of the application is a review of applications by a faculty team. E-mail notifications to those chosen for key positions will go out on Wednesday, 12/02/09. Other crew members will be assigned positions at a later date. Post-production for pilot will occur in spring semester in Harry Cheney's FTV 364/574 PRIME TIME PRODUCTION: EDITING THE ENSEMBLE DRAMA, however, we will assemble an editor’s cut by the end of Interterm. This class will replicate a real world experience in the rigors of producing a single-camera dramatic series on a weekly basis with advanced level instruction in the production of an episodic ensemble drama. A company consisting of multiple directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, etc. will join the group of writers who created the show. The cast will be SAG and Non-SAG. Just like Location Filmmaking, the production will require many hours of commitment, with the exact schedule to be determined.

The first general meeting of all the participants will be on 1/4/09 at 10:00am in Room 121. Everyone must be present; those absent will be dropped from the program. No exceptions! All students must attend pre-production meetings/workshops during the week of 1/4 to 1/8 and will need to be able to commit to the full production schedule, which will be approx. 12 shooting days between 1/11 and 1/30. Additionally, key creatives will be required to meet for casting and pre-production in the month of December, schedule to be determined.

*Volunteer to produce & shoot documentary video/film. My name is Owen Newell. I’m on the Board of Directors of Two Guys Grilling out of Dana Point. We do golf, civic, corporate events as well as private parties. We contribute 15% of our annual gross revenue to charity & we have assisted in raising $10 million for charitable events over the last two years. We have turned a superb BBQ menu into real “events”. We include local Beauty Pageant winners and the U.S. Army in our events. We have unique events. We take snaps of the events ourselves but what I want to find is a filmmaker or cinema photographer to do a documentary of our various events over a 60-90 day period. Start with a U.S. Army event for the Wounded Warriors The project could culminate with the Playboy Golf Finals, which we are doing 3/2010. Below are links from the Trevor Ariza Foundation charity golf event, Playboy Golf in l.A. & an article covering a non-profit event we recently did at the U.S. Army National Training Center @ Ft. Irwin CA. One or two events a month. Most locally in Orange County. Some in San Diego or L.A. County. School credit for the documentary. Students/staff would have full creative control of the project. Each event would be edited down to 30 minutes. The finished product would be edited down to 30 minutes and would be a narrative for the entire period. The finished product could be entered in documentary film festivals, in the students & producers name. If we submitted a 30 second PSA to the U.S. Army & it were selected, whatever compensation received would be donated to the Wounded Warriors relief fund & Chapman University Film School.
